Fulacht fia in Kilsarkan East

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Kilsarkan East holds a levelled fulacht fia where burnt black earth and shattered red stone still form a low mound. People heated water there without a visible source, perhaps drawing from hidden ground or carrying it from elsewhere. The site was flattened about twenty years before 1986, yet its shape remains obvious in the soil.
Site of levelled fulacht fia described in 1986 by the Castleisland District Archaeological Survey as follows; 'According to landowner the fulacht fia was levelled c. 20 years ago. A low mound of burnt black earth and burnt shattered red stone is still obvious here. The mound measures 5.9m N-S x 7.5m E-W x H 0.1m). No obvious water source' (SMR File).
