Fulacht fia in Killeens (cork By.)

In marshy ground, on E side of stream; one of a group of thre fulachta fiadha (CO074-00401-; CO074-00403-). Excavated in 1963 by O'Kelly (1954, 127-135); distinguishable prior to excavation as horseshoe-shaped mound (diam. 16m; H 1.4m) with opening to N. Excavation revealed pit containing rectangular oak-lined trough (L 1.76m; Wth 1.3m; D 0.52m). Base of trough formed by four non-contiguous planks; sides by horizontal planks; average thickness of planks was 0.05m. Packing of peaty material, stones and moss lay between trough and sides of pit. Small ring, gold-plated with copper core, found beneath base of trough. O Drisceóil (1988, 672) records radiocarbon date of 3115 ± 35 b.p. for site.
