Melt butter, bake bread or perhaps kill a man: the oval trough in Kilbrien still holds that old ambiguity. Heat-shattered stones and charcoal soil mark the place where water boiled around living people. The bypass took the field in 2003, but the small fierce kitchen remains named in Cork's archaeological inventory.

This fulacht fia was excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. Excavation revealed a thin scatter of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil, an oval trough (1.6m x 1.24m; D 0.54m) with three associated stake-holes, a smaller irregular pit and two post-holes.
