Hot stones cracked and hissed in the shallow trough, filling Jordanstown with steam and the smell of wet earth. People gathered there to heat water, cook food or clean tools, then left the pit behind as the landscape changed. The gas pipeline cut through the field decades later, exposing the buried circle and returning that forgotten heat to view.

Excavated in advance of the Gas Pipeline to the West (Licence no. 02E0686). Located in a rolling well-drained landscape the monument consisted of an irregularly shaped spread (1.4m x 1.2m) of firing material. The trough was sub-circular in plan (1.26m diam.) and appeared to have been abandoned and partially silted up (Tobin 2007, 220). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 4 February 2015
