Fulacht fia in Coolroe

Located in poorly drained rush-grown pasture. Ground falls away gradually to S to the Robe River. This fulacht fia was fully excavated (98E0389) in 1998 in advance of the construction by Mayo County Council of a sewage treatment works (Gillespie 1998, no. 484). It consisted of a horseshoe-shaped mound (12m N–S; 17m E–W; H 0.7m) of heat-shattered stone and charcoal-rich soil. Centrally located was a trough (3.5m x 2.3m; D 0.1m) with c. 35 timber stakes at or near its sides. There was also a second trough, square in shape with sides 1.6m long. Other features included a post-hole and a drain. Artefacts recovered included struck chert flakes, antler fragments and worked wood. Another fulacht fia (MA111-094001-) was located a few meters to W, and a third (MA111-094003-) a few meters to E. An area of prehistoric activity (MA111-094004-) was located c. 80m to W.
