Fulacht fia in Carrowmacloughlin (carra By.)

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Carrowmacloughlin holds a hidden kitchen where boiling water turned raw meat into sustenance before fire touched the plate. The site has vanished beneath scrub and memory, yet the shape of the work remains clear in the absence. A fulacht fia is not a mistake of landscape; it is a human instrument that stopped being visible. What is missing can still be understood because the function is written in the name and the region.
In a lowlying damp area with encroaching scrub at the E foot of a pasture ridge. Reported as a possible fulacht fia along with a possible enclosure (MA070-080002-) c. 35m to the WNW and a possible ringfort (MA070-080001-) c. 40m to the NW (SMR file). No visible surface trace of a monument survives at the reported location.  Date of visit: 14-11-2024 Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Leo Morahan
