Fulacht fia in Capnagower

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Situated on an E-facing slope at the outflow point (E end) of a small marshy basin below (to SE the Capnagower Road. The fulacht fia sits on the northern bank of the stream that rises in the and is c. 8m N of the stream bank. Directly opposite, on the southern side of stream is another fulacht fia (MA085-052----) c. 20m distant. There is also an enclosure (MA085-054----) just to NNW, the southern side of which is only c. 4m from centre of the fulacht fia. It consists of two contiguous, roughly ovate grassy mounds forming a rough horseshoe shape in plan (ENE–WSW 7.8m, NNW–SSW 6.5m, H c. 0.75m max. on E side). The U opens to SSE, towards the stream. The easternmost mound is the larger of the two, but only slightly so. A number of stones (max. L 0.3m × H 0.2m) protrude from its grassy surface along its south- ern side. The western mound has a flatter profile with a level summit and also has a number of similar-sized stones protruding from its grassy surface along its south-eastern and southern sides. At its southern tip is an orthostatic boulder (H 0.7m), tapering towards its top. The orthostatic boulder and another more block-like boulder (L 0.75m × H 0.35m) immediately to NNW may have formed part of a revetment. Between the two mounds, in the trough area, is a small stony area (c. 1m × 0.8m) mostly covered by moss and protruding only slightly from sod. No burnt stone is visible. The above description is derived from: New Survey of Clare Island. Volume 5: Archaeology. Edited by Paul Gosling, Conleth Manning and John Waddell. (Royal Irish Academy, Dublin. 2007). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 29 November 2018
