Fulacht fia in Cahereamore

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Hot stones, lifted water, pouring steam: the fulacht fia in Cahereamore turned pasture into a kitchen for bodies, cloth or ritual. A farmer dragging a pipe drain across the grass revealed the burnt mound beneath, proving that ordinary ground can hide fierce human activity. The site still breathes in the damp slope, waiting for someone to imagine the heat and noise that once filled it.
In damp pasture at the bottom of a N-facing slope with restricted views, c. 70m N of a stream. A fulacht fia comprising a subcircular, grass-covered, flat-topped mound (15.3m E-W; 11.7m N-S; H 0.5-0.8m) composed of burnt stone. The monument was identified by a local farmer during the laying of a pipe drain, and the gravel fill of the drain can be seen for 2.5m from the base of the mound to the N.    Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Eve Campbell   Date of upload: 29 October 2025
