Fulacht fia in Ballygullen (gorey By., Balloughter Ed)

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and set aside for resolution as Ballygullen 5 (Hardy et al. 2010, 43). It is situated just off a small plateau on the N side and was completely excavated (E4172) by B. Sutton when a burnt mound (dims 10.1m E-W; 8.2m N-S; max. D 0.33m) that covered a shallow subrectangular trough (dims 2.45m N-S; 1.54m E-W; max. D 0.15m) with a stake-hole at each corner and the shadow of planks on the base was recorded. A group of stake-holes immediately outside to the S and SW may represent a wind-break. The mound was disturbed by modern tillage features. The fulacht fia (WX011-071----) is c. 65m to the SW and fulacht fia (WX011-070----) is c. 150m to the NE in Ballinclay townland.
