Fulacht fia in Ballydowny

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

A mound of burnt material (c. 11m N-S; 4.4m E-W), which covered a hearth and an oval trough, was excavated in 2002 prior to the construction of a housing estate (Kiely 2004c, 218). A calibrated radiocarbon date of 1892-1540 BC was obtained from the lower of two layers of the burnt material and four stake holes, found 2m W of the hearth, may have marked the location of a windbreak (ibid.). Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011
