Fulacht fia in Ballyclogh (fermoy By.)

In pasture. Excavated in 1982-3 (Lehane 1988, 85-6, site 2) in advance of drainage works. Prior to excavation, site identified as irregular mound of burnt material. Removal of turf revealed irregular spread of burnt material (8.5m x 8.5m); only SE quadrant was excavated. Excavation revealed that trough consisted of rectangular pit (c. 1.5m x c. 2m) dug into subsoil at E end of mound; fragments of side timbers embedded in sides of pit; no floor timbers remained. A number of stake-holes excavated at NW end of trough were possibly remains of racks for hanging meat. Sample of side timbers was radiocarbon dated to 2705± 70 BP (UB 2626) (ibid., 87). One of a group of 10 fulachta fiadh (10256; 10258; 10259; 10260; 10261; 10262; 10729; 10264; 10265). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
