Francis Ledwidge served at Ebrington in 1916, a fact preserved on a blue plaque in Ebrington Square. The poet died in 1917, but the marker keeps his name attached to the place where he stood guard. Francis Ledwidge was an Irish nationalist and poet who served in the British Army during World War I; he is remembered for his poignant war poems and his tragic death at age 29 in the Battle of Passchendaele.
