Francis Annesley, born in Buckinghamshire around 1585, became the first Viscount Valentia after helping colonise Ulster and securing Irish estates. He clashed with Thomas Wentworth, who sentenced him to death for mutiny but never carried out the punishment. Annesley died in Yorkshire in 1660, leaving behind a life marked by royal favour, political danger and the violent expansion of English power into Ireland.
