France Belk and Newbury School of Dancing and Dramatic Art blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: From 1932 to 1967, this building was the premises of the Newbury School of Dancing and Dramatic Art, managed by France Belk (1897-1976) From 1936 to 1966, she directed, staged, and choreographed 28 highly successful full-length pantomimes at the Corn Exchange, involving local people and amateurs, adults and children. She also wrote the scripts and designed the colourful costumes and sets. The profits paid for two beds at the District Hospital and contributed to other charities. She contributed greatly to amateur dramatics in Newbury and her work was continued by the Newbury Operatic Society. Recorded plaque organisation: Newbury Town Council.
