Kilkea Demesne holds an upside-down granite basin on its church pathway, a forgotten font stripped of purpose but not forgotten by the stones. Its drainage hole still points sideways, waiting for water that no longer comes. The chamber may have bathed infants, marked vows, or simply watched the demesne breathe. Invert it in your mind and it becomes a font again, pouring life instead of holding it back.

Described in the Urban Survey (Bradley et. al. 1986, 284) as a ‘large undecorated circular granite basin (dims. H 0.44m; diam. 0.68m) lying upside down on pathway on S side of church. It has a side drainage hole'. Compiled by: Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 14 September 2016
