The font is described by Pike (1989, vol. 4, 580-1) as, 'made of limestone and has 16 sides. It is lead lined and has two compartments inside the bowl. There is a drain in the smaller compartment. The decoration on the sixteen sides shows Gothic window tracery, a cross, star, spirals and triangles. Pedestal and base have been restructured. There is no plinth. Total height 40 inches [1m]. The font was built during the medieval period, likely in the 12th or 13th century, and is associated with the Cistercian Abbey of Fertagh. It was later moved to the Roman Catholic church in Johnstown and is significant as a relic of the former monastic site.
