Flat cemetery in Ferns Upper holds at least six cremation pits on a slope below St. Evan's cathedral, where fire turned people to ash before pity or pride shaped the jars that held them. Two pits kept plain pottery fragments, suggesting households brought what they could afford rather than what ceremony demanded. The dead lay mixed with later pits and post holes, forcing later lives to keep using the same ground instead of leaving it untouched. Even without a visible building, the repetition of holes marks a place where remembering required constant return.

Situated on a SE-facing slope c. 70m NW of St. Evan's cathedral (WX015-003003-). Archaeological testing (03E0254) identified areas of activity over extensive parts of a development site (Sheehan 2006). Further work (04E0535) in Area B excavated a flat cemetery consisting of at least 6 cremation pits, two of which had fragments of undecorated pottery. The cremation pits were intermingled with other pits, some of which had post-medieval debris. Numerous post-holes were also dispersed amongst the pits but no structure could be identified.
