Fish Weir

In the Owenmore River. This monument was listed as ‘Weir’ in the SMR (1989) and RMP (1995). This is one of seven records for weirs (SL026-122----; SL026-126-----; SL026-130----; SL026-159-----; SL026-159001-; SL026-159002-; SL026-159003-) recorded in the SMR whose only source is noted as ‘Marked on estate map dated 1618’ (SMR file). It has not proved possible to identify this map. It is marked and named ‘Fish Weir’ on the 1837 edition of the OS 6-inch map; it is named ‘Eel Weir’ on the 1913 edition. On inspection in 1992 two upright posts, c. 15m apart, were noted in the middle of the river. It is likely that other residual elements survive on the river bed. Although the date of this weir is unknown the possibility that it pre-dates 1700 AD cannot be ruled out. Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 18 October 2011
