Field system

What is recorded here

Field system in Skreen More, farranyharpy is a field system in Skreen More, farranyharpy, County Sligo, Ireland. Red Hill is recorded on the 1913 map. The old walls appear as low stone banks or scattered stones, while newer walls mark present property boundaries. Both wall sets are visible across the hillside.
In pasture/grazing, located on the N-facing slopes and terraces of a large limestone hill which is named Red Hill on the 1913 OS 6-inch map. A system of relict field walls can be traced over an extensive area on the hill, overlain by the regular grid of extant walls which define the current property divisions. Some of the relict walls are depicted on the 1837 and 1913 OS 6-inch maps. In some areas the walls are visible as low, sod-covered stone banks (Wth 1.2-2m; H 0.2-0.5m), and in other areas, they are reduced to gapped lines of individual stones. For the most part, the walls respect the natural contours and terracing on the hill, and appear to have enclosed subrectangular and irregular-shaped fields on the level terraces. The remains are, however, fragmentary and a complete pattern of fields cannot be traced, nor is it possible to determine to what extent the various isolated wall fragments are contemporary with each other. Within the field system are a court tomb (SL019-011----), several enclosures (SL019-003----; SL019-008002-; SL019-008004-; SL019-008006-; SL019-009----; SL019-010----), hut sites (SL019-008001-; SL019-008007-; SL019-008008-), and a church (SL019-007001-) and graveyard (SL019-007002-).
