Field system in Rannagh West

Field system

What is recorded here

Yes. Curving stone walls slice through the Burren scrub, marking herds and households long before written records. They belong to the extensive field system of Rannagh West, where prehistoric and medieval boundaries still shape the upland. The stones do not need praise; they reveal that people lived there, tended there, and left behind a landscape made thoughtful rather than conquered.
In a karst upland area with much scrub cover. A number of curving field walls (running parallel to each other) visible on Digital Globe (2011-2013) and on OSi Aerial Premium (2012-2018). They are associated with some large enclosures (CL010-005002-, CL010-233----, CL010-234---- and CL010-235----) but form part of a larger extensive field system (CL005-160001-). Extensive field systems with prehistoric and medieval elements extend over most of the Burren uplands. Those currently visible on aerial or satellite imagery are outlined for mapping purposes but it is likely that they continue under scrub and meet in certain areas.
