Field system in Farranyharpy

In rough to average pasture, in an area of sharply undulating terrain, located on a ridge top bordered at S-W by a fall of ground into a stream valley, and overlooked to E by the rising slopes of Red Hill. Listed as ‘earthworks’in the RMP (1995) on the basis of features visible in an aerial photograph (ACP V 203/133-2; Roll 127, print 32). The features visible in the aerial photograph cover an area of c. 130m N-S by c. 140m E-W and consist of ruined field boundaries, seams of natural rock-outcropping, and areas of quarrying. The field boundaries represent the fragmentary remains of a field system. At ground level, the field boundaries are apparent only as low, sod-covered linear rises (Wth 1-2m; H 0.3-0.75m) from which stones protrude intermittently. The remains are fragmentary, and it is not possible to trace a coherent pattern of ancient fields. The field boundaries skirt or abut a number of other monuments, including a megalithic structure (SL018-051001-), a cashel (SL018-051002-), an enclosure (SL018-051004-), and two possible hut sites (SL018-051006-; SL018-051008-).
