Field boundary in Commons West (bear By.)

In rough peaty hill pasture, on the W-facing stony slopes of Miskish Mountain. A series of collapsed, relict, stone field boundaries (T 0.6m; H 0.5m), which protrude intermittently above the surface of the shallow bog, occur in a roughly rectangular area (c. 140m NE-SW; c. 70m NW-SE). In general, the relict field boundaries are linear but some shorter curvilinear stretches also occur. Larger stones occur in the remaining lower courses of the relict boundaries. It is likely that smaller stones were removed to build the walls of the enclosed hill fields to the NW. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
