Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Rinville West

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty-nine metres of drystone wall still stands on the Galway rise, though grass and shadow have swallowed the northern curve. The stones are not small; they are broad enough to break a knee and tall enough to hide a crouching child. People called it a fairy fort because the shape resisted ordinary explanation, yet the true strangeness is the chamber beneath the turf. What the ring kept out may have been curiosity itself.
On a rise in undulating pastureland. Circular cashel (diam. 39m), in fair condition, defined by a drystone wall (Wth 1.9m; max. ext. H 0.8m) best preserved from SE through S to NW. It is overgrown from NW to N to SE. A Man-made underground passage (GA095-135001-) is associated (Lynch Athy 1914, 137). Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 10 April 2018
