Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Portroyal

Cloon Island in Cloon Lough, County Mayo. Thirty-five metres of exposed stone circle, wall missing only to the north-east, a rectangular chamber ten metres long inside the ring. Dense vegetation still smothers the earthworks, hiding what the stones once held. The chamber may have stored grain, tools or a person during storms, but the shape and size suggest a dwelling rather than a trophy. Water lapped the base in wet years, forcing whoever lived there to read the lake before reading the sky.
