Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Parkaloughan

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Parkaloughan, County Galway: an oval cashel about 80 metres long and 55 metres wide, marked by a bank of earth and stone beneath later field walls. It sits in level pastureland, partly buried under ordinary farming boundaries, yet its shape still reads as a made place rather than a heap. People may have lived, hidden or worshipped there before the fields closed over it; the stones keep that much without explaining the rest.
In level pastureland. A poorly preserved oval cashel (c. 80m N-S; c. 55m E-W) defined by a bank of earth and stone which is overlain by field walls from S to NW, from NNW to NE and from E to S. (McCaffrey 1952, 244, no. 115) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 14 December 2017
