Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Lurgan (costello By., Annagh Par.). Fairy fort / stone ringfort. County Mayo, Ireland
In pasture, located on a ridge, at the break of slope where the ground shelves away to the SW, giving extensive views to S–SW over rolling pasture and to W over an expanse of bog. The gently undulating ridge top extends to NW, N and E, and c. 100m to NE there is a steep fall of ground into a boggy valley.
Slightly raised, circular area (23m N–S; 23.3m E–W) defined by a stony scarp (H 0.8-1m) with remnants of stone facing visible at S–SW.
The location of the original entrance is unclear. The interior is level, but is greatly damaged by two quarry pits, one (9.5m NW–SE; 6.5m NE–SW; D 0.8-1m) in the NE quadrant and one (12m NW–SE; 7.5m NE–SW; D 1m) extending from the N to the centre. A field wall/property boundary, on a NW–SE axis, crosses the SW edge of the enclosure.
