What is recorded here
One chamber, half a metre tall, no door, no floor mark, no life inside. The Gowlanes fort is a stone ring in rough pasture, not a chamber for people. It may have marked a boundary, a watch point or a sacred place. The missing door and clean ring suggest human intent, but the absence of living evidence denies certainty.
Internal diam. 22.4m N-S, 24.2m E-W
This circular enclosure, named 'Caher' on the OS Fair Plan, is located in rough pasture in a crook of the Gowlane river. It is poorly preserved and is covered with a dense layer of vegetation. Its enclosing wall survives to an average height of 1.65m, and consists of a rubble core faced internally and externally with drystone masonry. Larger boulders occur in its lower courses, which feature a slight batter. There is much collapse along the NW sector, where the entrance may have been located. Four field walls radiate out from the site, and no features were discerned in its overgrown interior.
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 593. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
