Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Fincashel

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible fort remains at Fincashel, but the name and hidden ground suggest a lost cashel. The land may have worn the wall into a ridge rather than erased the place entirely.
Internal diam. c. 30m. A 10m arc of stone wall c. 1.25m high incorporated in a field boundary would seem to be the remains of a cashel. There is no geographical reason for the bend in the wall at this point. It is densely overgrown and there is no local tradition but the townland name would strengthen the suggestion. It is situated on a roughly circular ridge of high ground. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
