Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Coad, killeen (killinaboy Par., Corrofin Ed)

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

That is a ringfort. It is also a fairy fort. The names overlap like breath on glass. Human hands built the circle. Fairy hands may have kept it. The hazel still grows thick around the stones. The boundary between the made and the hidden has never fully opened. What you know as a wall may be a threshold. What you dismiss as a story may be a memory.
In dense hazel woodland in undulating, E-facing land. Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This densely overgrown and poorly preserved subcircular cashel (int. diam. 24.5m NE-SW; ext. diam. 36.5m NE-SW) is defined by a band of wall collapse (Wth 6m; H 0.6-0.8m) in which facing-stones can be seen very intermittently. There is a hut site (CL017-074002-) at the centre. A barely visible entrance (Wth 1.8m) is at the SW. There is a modern subrectangular cairn (L c. 6m; Wth c. 2m; H c. 1m) 6m to the SW of the cashel. Later drystone walls overlie the cashel perimeter from SW to NE and from NE to SE. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 14 August 2023
