Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Cloghroak, rathcosgry

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible stone remains in Cloghroak, though a forty-eight metre circle once bit through the level grassland. The fort has vanished so completely that memory and myth must fill the hole left behind. Fairy fort is the name the place received after losing every human edge. What was built, forgotten and reclaimed becomes a vessel for whatever the region still believes it knows about hidden life.
In level grassland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 225, no. 125) as a very ruinous ‘Stone fort’ (diam. c. 48.2m). No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 29 November 2017

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
