Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Cloghane (clanmaurice By.)

Internal diameter 28m N-S This univallate cahir is situated in a corner of a field and is enclosed by fieldbanks to the W and S. Ballybunnion can be clearly seen to the N. The enclosing stone bank, which is now covered by grass, encloses a circular area. The bank is on average 9m wide at the base and rises to c 2.6m above the exterior fosse and to c 1m above the interior. The external fosse is well defined, but is only evident to the SE to S to SW, where it is c 5m wide and 1.9m deep. The interior is at much the same level as the surrounding land. In the interior is a mound of stones (KE009-014001-). 'Cave' (KE009-014002-) is marked on the 1841-42 OS map, though it does not appear on the later edition, but the surviving stones may represent where there was once a souteriain.
