Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Canbeg

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Canbeg holds a forgotten chamber where human fire and fairy witness still compete for the same stones. The severe drumlin slope faces the River Shannon, and the buried wall may have barred an doorway rather than closed a room. People called it a fairy fort because the shape refused ordinary use, not because the chamber was empty.
Located on the severe SE-facing slope of a drumlin c. 100m W of a NNE-SSW section of the River Shannon. This is a grass and rush-covered subcircular area (int. dims 22m NW-SE; 20m NE-SW) defined by the overgrown foundations of a stone wall (Wth 1m; int. H 0.1-0.5m; ext. H 0.5-0.8m), but the original entrance is not identified. The monument is curtailed by field walls at N and E. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
