Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Brodeen (Redcity parish), Redcity is a fairy fort or stone ringfort in Brodeen (Redcity parish), Redcity, County Tipperary, Ireland. The Irish name for Redcity, Cathair Dhearg, means Red Fort and points to a circular fort built of red sandstone near the old church. That fort is no longer visible because every trace was removed from the land surface. The exact townland remains uncertain because the church sits beside Brodeen.
According to the OS Letters (1840) the Irish name for Redcity townland was 'Cathair Dhearg which signifies Red Fort' and 'the name was originally applied to a circular fort constructed of red sandstone, near which the old Church was built, but this fort is now completely destroyed and every trace of it removed off the surface of the land' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 67 (180)). As the church (TS070-041----) in Redcity is situated adjacent to Brodeen townland, the possible cashel could be located in either townland. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 28 January 2013
