Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Ballymaconna

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort and ringfort in Ballymaconna, County Clare: a circular stone enclosure about 27m across, with a broad low stone spread and a small cairn near the centre. It has sat in a rocky, rain-washed landscape since at least the 1840 map, old enough to belong to memory rather than explanation. The stones do not pretend to be a palace; they mark a place where people, fairies or forgetfulness once drew a line and stopped.
Situated in a low-lying landscape with much rock outcrop. Hachured as a circular enclosure on the 1840 and 1920 OS 6-inch maps. A circular overgrown area (int. diam. 27m N-S; 24m E-W) defined by an overgrown stone spread (Wth 5.5-8.5m; int. H 0.5-1m; ext. H 0.3m at SSE to 1.3-1.8m generally) which is overlain by a drystone wall, but some outer facing is visible E-S. There is a cairn (diam. 3m; H 0.9m) N of the centre.
