Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Ardrumkilla

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Ardrumkilla holds a forgotten ringfort, likely medieval, now reduced to an eleven-metre drystone arc in undulating Galway farmland. The fairies probably finished what time and ploughs began, pulling the remaining stones beneath the grass to keep their own fortress private. Human hands built a circular home sixty metres across, but the land has reclaimed that memory. Only the western wall still protrudes, waiting for someone patient enough to listen for the shape underneath.
In low-lying gently undulating farmland. Named 'Fort' on OS Fair Plan, and marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 60m). Apart from an arc of drystone wall (L 11m) at WNW, no visible surface trace survives The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
