Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Ardaneer

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

No gate, no seam, no break in the wall. The ring closes across itself like a fist, trapping whatever breathes inside. It stands on a limestone shelf where the rock shows through grass and rain carves narrow cuts into the earth. What was kept there is no longer named. The fort still holds its shape, waiting for the thing it was built to deny.
In pasture, atop flat rocky terrace in area of frequent limestone outcrops cut by gullies. Roughly circular area (28m N-S; 25m E-W) enclosed by collapsed drystone wall (H c. 0.85m; Wth c. 4m); outside edge of enclosing element truncated SE->SW by E-W field boundary. No entrance apparent. Interior level and under grass; some limestone outcrops on E side. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
