Fairy fort / ringfort in Skehanagh North

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not the work of fairies, though people once believed it. They are human rings, built by mortal hands, often as boundary markers, ritual places or settlements. The true wonder is that ordinary people made them, and time has made them mysterious.
On a S-facing slope in grassland. Subcircular rath (N-S 33m, E-W 29.5m), in fair condition, defined by a bank at NW and elsewhere by a scarp. Abutting the monument at N is a rectangular annexe (E-W; L 18m, Wth 9.5m) defined by a grassed-over stone bank. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
