Fairy fort / ringfort in Kilshanvy

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilshanvy is a forgotten ringfort, a circular enclosure about 35 metres wide that vanished beneath reclaimed grassland. It may have been a small defensive settlement or a boundary marker for a lost community, but no wall, ditch or entrance remains visible. The land has been taken back by agriculture and time, erasing the shape that once defined it. What is left is a coordinate and a question about who lived there before the grass closed over their world.
On a slight rise in reclaimed grassland. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 35m). No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
