Fairy fort / ringfort in Kilmore (ballymoe By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Kilmore held a vanished circular fort roughly twenty-five metres across on a grassy rise above northern bogland. People built that ring around themselves, perhaps for residence or defense, then disappeared into the long green memory of Galway. The earth swallowed the stones and walls until nothing visible remains. What is left is a hollow shape in the landscape, wide enough for doubt and large enough for imagination.
On a rise in undulating grassland overlooking bogland to NW. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 25m). No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
