Fairy fort / ringfort in Greenville

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Quarrying has bitten into the southeast edge, but the oval rath still holds its shape on the Greenville hillock. A western causeway leads through what remains of the outer bank and fosse, inviting entry into a space large enough for houses, herds, or argument. The northwest bank rises intact while the rest depends on a scarp cut into the hill, as if the earth were remaking the fort whenever people stopped watching.
On a hillock in grassland. Well-preserved oval rath (N-S 57m, E-W 48m) defined byan inner bank at NW, and elsewhere by a scarp. Traces of an intervening fosse and outer bank survive at W. Entrance causeway at W. Quarrying has encroachedupon the monument at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
