Fairy fort / ringfort in Graiguenavaddoge

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortars and men took the fort for themselves, leaving a wound in its southern skin where stone and soil disappeared. What remains is a shallow circle in level grass, its inner bank fading from west to north while a hidden scarp completes the shape. The causewayed entrance still points southeast, inviting entry into a place that resisted measurement. Fairy fort is the name people gave what they could not take or explain.
In level grassland. Poorlypreserved circular rath (D 29m) defined by two banksand an intervening fosse. The inner bank is visiblefrom W to N; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosingelement. The fosse and outer bank are present at SW, no visible surface trace survives elsewhere. Causewayed entrance at SE. Quarrying has encroachedupon the enclosing elements from SE to SSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
