Fairy fort / ringfort in Deerpark (shillelogher By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Deerpark holds a circular fort thirty metres across, ringed by an eight-metre ditch that human boundaries still bend around instead of cutting through. Trees have strangled the entrance and pasture grass has swallowed the inner floor, yet the shape remains clear enough for surveyors to draw twice across a century. The fairies may have taken the people, but they left the geometry behind.
In pasture. Indicated on the 1st (1839-40) ed. OS 6-inch map and the 1945-6 revision as a circular enclosure (int. diam. c. 30-35m) enclosed by wide fosse (Wth c. 8m). A townland boundary runs immediately W of the monument, kinking out to avoid it. It is heavily overgrown with trees. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 15 September 2020
