Fairy fort / ringfort in Crinnage OR Ballywulash

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Ballywulash and Crinnage still debate the fort's true name, giving the dead a rare choice of address. The circular enclosure stood beside the Craughwell River until human boundaries and forgetting clipped it away. Fairy forts do not vanish; they stop answering the names people are still learning to speak.
In scrubland, c. 150m to the N of the Craughwell River. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 45m). A NNW-SSE running field boundary clipped the enclosing element at E. McCaffrey (1952, 155, no. 82) recorded that it was 'Not present' when he carried out his survey. No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 23 July 2019
