Fairy fort / ringfort in Cregmore (clare By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

The field wall now cuts through the ancient ring, dividing the circle into two separate lives. You can still walk the north arc where the drystone wall holds firm, but the east and west gaps suggest modern hands broke the shape. Perhaps the fort stopped being a fort when the field wall arrived, becoming instead a boundary marker for grass and sheep. The circle lost its center when the line crossed it.
On a gentle N-facing slope in grassland. Very poorly preserved circular cashel (D 36m) defined by a drystone wall, best preserved from W through N to E. A field wall cuts the monument at W and E. Gaps at E and W appear modern. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
