Fairy fort / ringfort in Cooperhill Demesne

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Cooperhill Demesne in County Laois once held a circular fort forty-five metres across, marked on the 1841 map but now erased from the undulating countryside. The land may have swallowed the stones or people may have forgotten the name, yet the absence makes the shape easier to imagine. A ringfort is not a fairy tale, but it is a hole in memory where imagination enters.
Marked on the 1841 edition of the OS 6-inch map; a circular 'fort' (max. diam. c. 45m). Situated in undulating countryside. No visible surface remains. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
