Fairy fort / ringfort in Clonmeen North

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible stones remain, but the 1841 map still draws a thirty-metre circle in the rolling field. Human hands may have built that ring before forgetting it, while fairy hands may have taken the stones back into the dark. Clonmeen North keeps both claims alive because absence does not erase shape; it only redirects memory.
Situated in undulating countryside. Marked on the 1841 edition of the OS 6-inch map; a circular 'fort' (max. diam. c. 30m). No visible surface remains. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
