Fairy fort / ringfort in Castle Ffrench East

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Modern ploughs and hungry cattle have chewed the ancient ring into a broken necklace, yet the dark band of the fosse still marks the invisible edge. People built a defensible home in that gentle grassland before memory faded, likely watching herds or waiting for trouble while believing the local story that fairies occupied the fort. The earth remembers the shape even when human arrogance forgets it.
In gently undulating grassland. Poorly preserved subcircular ringfort (E-W 40m, N-S 35m) defined by an overgrown bank of earth and stone and an external fosse. From S to SW the bank is incorporated into a field boundary, outside of which a band of darker vegetation indicates the fosse. Several breaches in the bank appear modern. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
