Maeve and her mother walked to Carrowreagh after dark, following the ridge where the grass leaned like water. They circled the faded fort twice, listened for the knock behind the bank, and came home with red clay on their shoes. Nobody in Kilconnell believed them at first, but children keep visiting the rise and swear they hear knocking when the wind stops.
