Carrowholla is a circular rath with two banks and an intervening fosse, still standing on a rise in undulating Galway grassland. It is the kind of place where people may have lived, hidden or raged before the region had written memories. The fairness of its lines suggests pride, care and repeated use rather than abandoned fantasy.
