Fairy fort / ringfort in Ballagh East (clonmacnowen By.)

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are often called that because people stopped asking questions and started inventing stories. This one is a ringfort in Ballagh East, near Clonmacnowen, with a bank, a ditch, and a narrow gap on the east side. It is the kind of place where ordinary life may have become extraordinary only after being forgotten.
Some 150m SE of an earthwork (GA099-018----) Subcircular rath (E-W 34m, N-S 32m), in fair condition, defined by a bank and an external fosse best preserved at E. A gap (Wth 1.9m) at E may be original. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
